Hull York Medical School (HYMS) is a problem-based, community-focused five-year MBBS spread across two universities and the wider region. Its selection is a transparent points system: your UCAT, GCSEs, SJT band and contextual factors combine into a single ranking for interview.
HYMS scores applicants on a clear points system: your UCAT is worth up to 40 points (allocated by decile), your best six GCSEs up to 30, your SJT band up to 15, and contextual factors up to 15 — and these combine to rank you for interview. SJT Band 4 is an automatic rejection, and a UCAT around the 6th decile or above is the rough floor. Because contextual points carry real weight, HYMS is notably accessible to widening-participation applicants.
HYMS rewards strength across the board, but the decile-based UCAT points (up to 40) make a high score genuinely valuable. If your GCSEs are strong and your UCAT lands in the upper deciles, you'll rank well — just keep your SJT out of Band 4. Contextual applicants have a real advantage here.

HYMS awards UCAT points by decile (up to 40), so there's no single cut-off, but roughly the 6th decile is the floor and the upper deciles rank well. Your score combines with GCSEs, SJT band and contextual points — and SJT Band 4 means automatic rejection.
Through a points system: up to 40 for UCAT, 30 for your best six GCSEs, 15 for SJT band and 15 for contextual factors, combined into a single ranking.
