Brighton and Sussex Medical School: UCAT score& entry requirements

BSMS is a research-intensive five-year BMBS on the south coast, jointly run by the universities of Brighton and Sussex. Its selection is refreshingly clear: meet the academic bar, then your total UCAT ranks you for interview — after which the offer is decided on the interview alone.

In short
  • After an academic screen, BSMS ranks candidates purely on total UCAT for interview.
  • Only SJT Band 3 or above is considered for 2026 entry.
  • Standard offer is AAA including Biology and Chemistry; grade 6 in GCSE Maths and English.
  • Interviews are MMIs of five ~10-minute stations; offers are made on interview alone.

How Brighton & Sussex uses the UCAT

BSMS first screens applicants against its academic requirements, then ranks everyone purely on their total UCAT score to decide interview invitations — so above the academic bar, the UCAT is the lever. For 2026 it considers only SJT Band 3 or above. As the first post-Abstract-Reasoning year, comparable guides have floated around 1907 for home applicants, but the real line is set by the pool. After interview, offers are based on interview performance alone.

Is your score competitive here?

Because BSMS ranks on total UCAT for interview and then resets to interview-only for offers, it suits a strong UCAT scorer who interviews well. Get a competitive score to secure the interview, keep your SJT out of Band 4, then focus everything on the MMI — your earlier score won't carry into the offer decision.
